On-Line Tutoring for Students
Parent Question Time on Google Hangouts
The majority of our students fit into two broad categories:
- Those wanting to learn to read and spell at a functional level, and
- Those wanting to achieve grade level in maths.
Reading Program
The Kip McGrath Reading Program consists of 80 sessions to move a child from a non-reader (having a reading age of less than 5 years) to a functional reader (having a reading age of 9 years). Depending on a child’s reading age when they are assessed, determines where they start in the Reading Program. For example, it would take 30 sessions (3 School Terms) to raise a student’s reading age a year and a half on average.
Spelling Program
The Kip McGrath Spelling Program consists of 7 levels with each level taking 20 sessions (2 School Terms) to complete. Each of our levels is equivalent to a grade level at school.
Maths Program
The Kip McGrath Maths Program consists of 12 levels with each level taking 20 sessions (2 School Terms) to complete. Similar to the spelling levels, our maths levels equate to a grade level at school. Maths tends to take longer to achieve grade level than English. The reason is that while we are filling the gaps in previous knowledge, students are constantly learning new maths concepts at school.
Students work through our levels as fast or as slow as they need to achieve competency. We aim for a score of 70-75% in every activity they complete. With this success rate they are happy with their achievement and also challenged to improve. Mr McGrath calls it the “Goldilocks Principle”- not too easy/ not too hard/ just right. This calls on our skill as teachers to get that level right every session. We monitor and adjust a student’s program every week to achieve this aim.
Again, we apologise if anyone has been left out as there are so many of you that are doing well!

Term 3 student testing results are on their way…
Testing and reports are done for your child if they are in Year 10 or below and have been coming to Kip McGrath for more than a term.
Unfortunately all students did not complete their testing last term. These should be completed as soon as these students return during the first couple of weeks back.
We are sorry for the delay. Final results will be emailed by the end of October.
If you have any questions or concerns about this, please give us a call.
On-Line Tutoring has finally arrived !!
Head Office has officially released On-Line Tutoring and it is now available for us to use.
We will trial it for a couple of weeks with a few students while we learn how to best use the software and then we will open it up to anyone who will benefit from it.
If you are interested in trialling On-Line Tutoring, please email us now [HERE]
Parent Question Time on Google Hangouts
Some of you may remember we trialed some Parent Information Sessions at our Centres a few months back. It was called “Tricks of the Trade” and was about tips and tricks you could use to help your children with their Times Tables.
Now although these sessions were very well received, it was difficult to find times that were convenient for everyone to come into the Centre.
Thinking about this, and from some feedback at our recent Parent Lunches, we have decided to try an on-line solution…
Google have a thing they call “Hangouts”. It is like an on-line conference call where groups of people can get together at one time to watch presentations or participate in discussions such as question and answer sessions. It is done “live” so people can participate as much or as little as they wish.
The advantages we can see is that…
- You can do it from the comfort of your own home, and
- All you need is a Google log-in (you already have one if you have a YouTube log-in or a gmail account)
So the plan is to conduct these sessions with Parents (and maybe Students in the future) so we can help you with the education of your child and answer any questions you may have.
What we need from you is…
- What Topics would you like to have us discuss?
- What would be your preferred time to hold a session?
Please let us know what you would like by emailing us [HERE]
We look forward to hearing from you about these on-line options to better help you and your child.
