LEARNING TO SPELL ENGLISH CAN BE FRUSTRATING TO MASTER

Poor spellers have trouble remembering the letters in words because they have trouble noticing, remembering, and recalling the features of language that those letters represent.

Now you may argue that the need to spell is less important with our electronic devices having spell checker on them. The fact is that school exams and other schoolwork still require students to write, so if words are miss spelt or not grammatically correct, your child will be disadvantaged at school.Because English is made up of words from many languages, it may seem to have no logic. However, approximately 80% of English words follow regular spelling patterns. For the majority of words, the sounds in the word (there are 44 sounds made by 26 letters) are matched with letters of the alphabet according to particular rules. These rules can be learned and applied to aid correct spelling. The other 20%, the exceptions to the rule, need to be remembered in other ways.

Children who fall behind classmates in spelling, who forget words easily, or who mix up letters when writing, are children who need special, loving, considerate attention regularly. Look at words together and break the words into sound chunks, talk about the patterns of letters you see and where the words came from originally. Teach your children to love words.
