Online Tutoring Etiquette

With COVID-19 still causing uncertainty and with winter upon us, we have decided to continue delivering tutoring only online at least until the end of Term 2. If that changes, we will let you know. All of our tutors and students are enjoying their online sessions. Here are some things to be mindful of when online so everyone can continue to have the best online experience possible. We have 7 suggestions.

1. Choose an area as quiet as possible. Make sure background noise is kept to a minimum, particularly from televisions. Even when wearing headphones with a microphone, background noise can still be distracting.

2. Have all the things you need within arm’s length of your workspace. These include the power cord for your computer, pens, and paper, a scientific calculator for high school students, a ruler is handy and anything your tutor needs you to have.

3. Classes will begin on time and also finish on time. If a student logs on after 10 minutes into the session, we recommend that the lesson be deferred and rescheduled. Some helpful tips for being on time include using a calendar app of some kind and scheduling reminders 15 min ahead of time.

4. Have the computer switched on and logged in ready to start at least 5 minutes before your session is due to begin. You can start your first activity while you are waiting for your tutor, however, please don’t do more than your first activity before you talk to your tutor.

5. Parental supervision is recommended for students who struggle with finding keys on the keyboard or following verbal instructions.

6. Please don’t eat during your session. We are only together for a short time so we need all your time focused on learning.

7. Ensure the camera is on your face. It is polite to look at a person when they are talking to you. Have the light source in front of you. This will make sure that your face is well lit and easy to see.

Please keep these suggestions in mind and we will all enjoy our online tutoring sessions even more.
